How to Remove Weapon Sway (Shake) in CS2: Complete Guide
One of the most discussed features in Counter-Strike 2, inherited from CS:GO, is the so-called "weapon sway" or "shake" (often referred to as "tr_jaska" from community terms). This is not a bug but an intentional mechanic added by the developers to simulate the shaking of the weapon and the character's hands while running, shooting, and performing other actions. However, for many players, especially those accustomed to a clean and stable picture, this shake can disrupt concentration and precise aiming. Fortunately, it can be significantly reduced or almost entirely removed.
What is Weapon Sway (Viewmodel) and Why Does It Exist?
In CS2, "shake" refers to the animation of your weapon model (viewmodel), which moves, sways, and trembles to add more realism and dynamism to the gameplay. While this adds visual flair, it can also:
Distract from aiming.
Create a feeling of shooting inaccuracy.
Cause discomfort and eye strain during long gaming sessions.
Previously in CS:GO, a separate console command cl_bobcycle was available to control this parameter, but in CS2, Valve has significantly limited customization options to preserve the game's visual integrity. However, a few working methods remain.
Method 1: Using Console Commands (Primary Method)
This is the most effective and popular way to reduce weapon sway. It involves changing parameters via the game console.
Enable the Console. Go to Game Settings -> Game -> Enable Developer Console (~). Set it to Yes.
Open the Console. Press the ~ (tilde) key, usually located below the Esc key.
Enter the Commands. Copy and paste the following command into the console:
cl_bobcycle 0.5 - changes the frequency of oscillations, making them smoother.
cl_bob_lower_amt 5 - reduces the amplitude of weapon sway when running.
Create an autoexec.cfg File (To Save Settings). To make the commands apply automatically every time you launch the game, you need to create a special config file.
Navigate to your game folder: ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg
In this folder, create a new text document and name it autoexec.cfg. Be sure to change the file extension from .txt to .cfg.
Open the file with Notepad, paste the same commands into it, and save.
In the console, type exec autoexec to apply it, or simply restart the game.
Method 2: Graphics Settings Optimization
Graphics quality can also affect the perception of sway. A higher FPS (Frames Per Second) makes the picture smoother, which can subjectively reduce the discomfort from the shake.
Open Settings -> Video.
Set Display Mode to Fullscreen. This provides the best performance.
Adjust Graphics Quality settings. Set global settings or specific details like shadows and effects to Medium or Low to achieve a stable high FPS.
Method 3: Enabling NVIDIA Reflex / AMD Anti-Lag
Modern monitors and GPUs support technologies like NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag.
In the CS2 video settings, enable NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency (for NVIDIA GPU users). Set the value to On + Boost. This will not remove the sway animation itself but will significantly reduce input lag, making movement and shooting feel more responsive and precise.
Important Information
Valve intentionally limits the ability to completely remove weapon sway to maintain a specific gameplay experience and visual identity for CS2.
The console commands mentioned above are legal settings and will not result in a VAC ban.
The effect of these settings is subjective. Experiment with the values in the commands (e.g., try 0.15 instead of 0.1) to find what is most comfortable for you.
Conclusion
While you can no longer completely remove weapon sway in CS2 as was possible in older versions of the game, a combination of console commands, optimizing your graphics for high FPS, and enabling NVIDIA Reflex or similar technologies can reduce its negative impact to an absolute minimum. This will help you focus better on your target and feel more comfortable in the game.
